U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced the CHIPS Improvement Act today, aiming to amend the CHIPS and Science Act (CHIPS). The original CHIPS Act, signed into law in 2022, was designed to shift semiconductor manufacturing from China to the United States. However, according to Tuberville and Lee, the act's final version includes numerous regulations, such as DEI requirements and environmental justice initiatives, which have caused delays in implementation and access to funding.
Senator Tuberville stated, "The Biden administration has put American manufacturing, and the American worker, last on the world stage." He emphasized that America cannot afford to let China outpace it in technology and innovation. Tuberville argued that by removing what he termed "woke regulations," the bill could better achieve its goal of reducing American reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
Senator Lee echoed these sentiments: "Since his first day in office, Joe Biden has used every tool at his disposal to advance his radical DEI agenda that aims to divide our country and upend our founding values." He expressed pride in co-sponsoring the CHIPS Improvement Act with Tuberville, believing it would prevent taxpayer money from being used to enforce DEI criteria on companies.
The legislation is also cosponsored by U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE). The full text of the proposed legislation is available for public review.
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP.
