U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has voiced his support for Doug Collins, President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA). In an op-ed published in the Washington Reporter, Tuberville commended Collins' conservative record during his tenure in Congress and highlighted his long-standing service as a military chaplain.
Tuberville, whose father was a World War II veteran, emphasized the importance of fulfilling the federal government's obligation to provide veterans with quality care. He stated, "As the son of a World War II veteran, one of the main reasons I ran for U.S. Senate was to ensure the federal government was fulfilling its obligation to provide our great veterans with the timely, quality care earned through their service to this great country."
The senator criticized what he described as a deviation from the VA's mission under President Biden's administration. He cited issues such as facilitating abortions and restricting access to community care as contradictions to U.S. law and policies like the MISSION Act.
"There is clearly a substantial amount of rightsizing that needs to be conducted at the VA," Tuberville wrote, adding that it would require a secretary committed to driving change within the agency.
Doug Collins is recognized by Tuberville as someone capable of addressing these challenges due to his experience as a former U.S. Congressman and current Air Force Reserve Chaplain. "Doug Collins is a former U.S. Congressman, long-time pastor, and current Air Force Reserve Chaplain," Tuberville noted. "He’s an Iraq War veteran and continues his work at home as Chaplain at the Air Force Reserve Command."
Senator Tommy Tuberville serves Alabama in the United States Senate and participates in several committees including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs.
