U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has recognized U.S. Navy Lieutenant John Vick of Andalusia as the "Veteran of the Month" for October. John Vick, who founded the Covington Veterans Foundation, is celebrated for his dedication to honoring veterans in Covington County.
Senator Tuberville shared that John's commitment to military service began at a young age. "When you ask John Vick of Andalusia where his desire to serve in the military began, he traces it back to when he was just seven years old," Tuberville stated. Growing up near Red Level, Vick was deeply affected by witnessing flag-draped caskets of soldiers being brought home, sparking his patriotic spirit and commitment to ensuring sacrifices are remembered.
After completing high school in Andalusia, Vick received a full Navy ROTC scholarship to Auburn University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1962. He was commissioned into the Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant before returning to Covington County in 1966.
In 2019, Vick established the Covington Veterans Foundation (CVF) which honors local veterans by displaying over 600 banners throughout Andalusia. His involvement extends beyond this initiative; he has served on boards including Southern National Corporation and CCB Community Bank for decades and is active with local organizations like the Andalusia Lions Club and First Methodist Church.
"Thanks to John’s efforts, CVF has been able to display more than 600 veteran banners throughout the City of Andalusia," Tuberville remarked. He added that Vick exemplifies service and patriotism cherished by Alabamians.
Each month, Senator Tuberville acknowledges an Alabama veteran for their contributions both during and after their military service. Constituents are encouraged to nominate veterans for this recognition through his office.
Senator Tommy Tuberville serves Alabama in the United States Senate and is part of several committees including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs.
