U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has joined U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Jack Reed (D-RI) in cosponsoring a bipartisan resolution to designate September 2024 as National Literacy Month.

According to a 2020 study in partnership with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, low levels of adult literacy could be costing America as much as $2.2 trillion a year.

“Our youth are the future of this country,” said Senator Tuberville. “Since the pandemic, it has become evident that too many of our kids are reading below grade level. That is unacceptable and we must do better. Education is the key to unlocking opportunity and that starts with teaching kids to read. I’m honored to join this resolution which emphasizes the crucially important work we must continue to do to improve child literacy rates.”

U.S. Senators Tuberville, Cassidy, and Reed are joined by U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Mike Braun (R-IN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), John Cornyn (R-TX), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Angus King (I-ME), James Lankford (R-OK), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Tim Scott (R-SC), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) in cosponsoring the resolution.

The National Parents Union, Ed Trust, and Educators for Excellence have endorsed the resolution.

Full text of the resolution can be found here.

Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP Committees.
