U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) today questioned Jane Harman, Chair of the Commission on the National Defense Strategy, and Eric Edelman, Vice Chair of the Commission on the National Defense Strategy, during a Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) hearing. The discussion covered threats at the southern border, military recruitment issues, education in schools, and Ukraine's potential NATO membership.
Regarding border security, Tuberville expressed concern about its mention in the commission's report. "Is our southern border a national threat? I’ve only seen it in your report one time," he said. Edelman affirmed this by stating that border security is indeed a threat and called for additional funding across national security agencies, including DHS.
Tuberville highlighted specific concerns about Chinese nationals crossing the U.S. border and fentanyl trafficking from China. "80,000 Chinese [people have] come across [the] border in the last nine months. Is that a threat?" he asked. Edelman responded that it is a potential threat.
On military recruitment standards, Tuberville noted changes mentioned in the commission's report to accommodate more young recruits. Edelman explained that some current standards might be outdated or irrelevant. Tuberville raised concerns about hate being taught in schools affecting patriotism among youth. Harman agreed that hate on both sides is destructive and emphasized the need for civics education and institutions promoting patriotism.
Discussing Ukraine's NATO membership, Tuberville sought clarity on its future within NATO amidst ongoing conflicts. Edelman stated that NATO had decided back in 2008 under President George W. Bush’s administration that Ukraine would eventually join but noted it was not appropriate while conflict persists.
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP Committees.
