U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has written an op-ed in OutKick concerning the protection of women's sports in light of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. In his piece, Sen. Tuberville criticizes the Biden-Harris administration's recent Title IX rewrite, claiming it undermines the integrity of women's sports. He also points to USA Boxing’s decision to allow men to compete against women as a detrimental move.
“Whether in little league or the Olympics, allowing men to compete in women’s sports is just wrong,” stated Sen. Tuberville.
Sen. Tuberville draws on his experience as a coach and educator over four decades, emphasizing the positive impact of Title IX since its implementation. “Title IX had just been implemented, and I saw firsthand the tremendous impact it had on women’s sports,” he wrote. The senator highlighted how this legislation provided equal opportunities, scholarships, and resources for female athletes.
He further discussed how Title IX facilitated significant advancements in women's sports, which will be showcased during the 2024 Olympics by athletes such as Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Gabby Thomas, and Suni Lee.
However, Sen. Tuberville expressed concerns about recent actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration that he believes threaten these advancements. “Earlier this year, the Education Department issued a Title IX rule that threatens to pull federal funding from schools if they don’t allow men to compete in women’s sports,” he noted.
With the 2024 Olympics commencing in Paris, Sen. Tuberville hopes that the achievements of female athletes will inspire efforts to protect their progress under Title IX. He urged Congress to consider his bill aimed at safeguarding women's sports.
“I am calling on Chuck Schumer and my Democrat colleagues to immediately take up my bill to save women’s sports,” he concluded.
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP.
