U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, representing Alabama, has reintroduced the HBOT Access Act alongside Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer from North Dakota. This legislation aims to make Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) accessible for veterans suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly those who have exhausted other treatment options.
Senator Tuberville highlighted the importance of expanding HBOT access during a U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, where he received strong support from attending veterans. "Our veterans face many battles from their time in war—including those that we can’t see," said Senator Tuberville. "We must do more to support them as they face these silent struggles, especially when it comes to mental health."
The HBOT Access Act requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to offer HBOT as a treatment option for veterans with TBI or PTSD who have tried at least two evidence-based treatments. Although HBOT is FDA-approved for 14 different illnesses, it is not currently approved by the VA for traumatic brain injuries despite documented benefits within the veteran community.
Senator Tuberville serves on several committees including the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and has been active in introducing legislation to improve care and benefits for veterans. The HBOT Access Act is endorsed by the American Legion and builds on previous legislation like the Right to Try Act.
Senator Tuberville's ongoing efforts reflect his commitment to enhancing healthcare access for America's veterans.
