U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville and Rick Scott have introduced the Restore Merit to Government Service Act, aiming to reestablish merit-based hiring within federal agencies. This legislative move seeks to formalize an executive order by President Trump from last month, which targeted the elimination of discriminatory hiring practices in favor of merit-based recruitment.
Senator Tuberville emphasized the need to abandon diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, stating, "We must wash our hands of DEI. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris nearly destroyed the fabric of our country with this woke, racist ideology." He praised President Trump's efforts to prioritize merit-based hiring and urged Congress to support this direction.
Senator Scott echoed these sentiments, arguing that previous policies have not served Americans' best interests. "For years, Democrats have pushed radicalized policies into the innermost workings of our government," he said. Scott called for his colleagues' support in passing the bill to ensure federal agencies hire based on qualifications.
President Trump signed executive actions on January 21, 2025, aimed at reforming federal hiring processes and eliminating illegal discrimination in hiring practices.
