U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has reintroduced the Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act. The bill aims to prevent men from participating in female athletic events governed by organizations recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC). This move is part of his ongoing efforts to protect Title IX and preserve women's sports.

Representative Greg Steube from Florida introduced a corresponding bill in the House. Senator Tuberville emphasized, "Men should not be competing in women’s sports at any level." He expressed concerns about safety and fairness, referencing instances where men have competed against women in the Olympics.

Representative Steube echoed these sentiments, criticizing what he views as an extremist agenda affecting sports governance. "It is more important than ever that we stand up for common sense by prohibiting biological males from competing in female athletics," he stated.

The legislation has garnered support from various organizations and stakeholders advocating for women's sports. Riley Gaines, a 12-time NCAA All American Swimmer, voiced her gratitude for the leadership shown by Tuberville and Steube, highlighting their commitment to fairness and safety.

The Independent Council on Women’s Sports also supports the bill, stating that it addresses a significant inequity undermining opportunities for female athletes. Terry Schilling, President of the American Principles Project, criticized current policies allowing men to compete in women's categories as unfair.

Kris Ullman, President of Eagle Forum, called for bipartisan support for the act to ensure fairness in women's sports. The Women's Liberation Front applauded Rep. Steube's efforts following controversial decisions made during Women's Olympic Boxing events.

Matt Sharp from the Alliance Defending Freedom emphasized the importance of recognizing biological differences between genders to maintain equal athletic opportunities for women. Paula Scanlan from Independent Women’s Voice praised Tuberville and Steube's leadership on this issue.

Payton McNabb shared her personal experience with injuries sustained while competing against male athletes, supporting legislative efforts to protect women’s sports.

The backdrop includes USA Boxing's updated policy allowing transgender athletes under specific conditions since January 2024. Under existing laws like the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, USOC recognizes governing bodies such as USA Boxing.

Senator Tuberville's long-standing advocacy for preserving Title IX reflects his background as an educator and coach who witnessed its positive impacts firsthand. In January 2025, he led efforts with Republican colleagues to introduce related legislation aimed at safeguarding Title IX protections across U.S. women's sports competitions.
