U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has announced the passage of the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (SICAA) through both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislation is now awaiting the President's signature to become law.
Senator Tuberville, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Subcommittee on Children and Families, expressed his commitment to protecting young people. "I dedicated my life to mentoring young people because they are the most precious commodity that we have. If we get everything else right, but neglect our young people, our country has no future," said Tuberville.
The bill received support from Senators John Cornyn and Jeff Merkley in the Senate. In the House, Congressmen Earl L. “Buddy” Carter and Ro Khanna led efforts for its passage.
The legislation aims to address issues within residential care facilities that have faced criticism for abuses occurring behind closed doors. Paris Hilton, an advocate for reform due to her own experiences with abuse in such facilities, has been instrumental in raising awareness about these issues.
SICAA seeks to enhance oversight and data transparency in institutional youth treatment programs while improving information sharing between states and promoting best practices to prevent abuse.
Senator Tuberville represents Alabama in the U.S. Senate and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP.
