U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has joined forces with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC-05), and 128 other lawmakers in urging the Department of Education (ED) to withdraw its latest proposal to transfer student loan debt onto American taxpayers. The proposed rule, they argue, will burden Americans with an additional $147 billion, raising the total student loan debt transferred to taxpayers to as much as $1 trillion.
The lawmakers wrote, “The latest Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) proposed by your Department of Education on April 17, 2024, represents the latest in a string of reckless attempts to transfer as much as $1 trillion of student loan debt from those who willingly borrowed to those who did not or have already repaid their loans.” They further criticized the administration for using borrowers as political pawns and alleged that these proposed actions are illegal.
The group also pointed out that while the Biden administration continues to prioritize enacting student loan schemes, it has failed to properly implement the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program. This failure is preventing students and families from accessing crucial financial aid information as they make decisions about their educational futures.
Senator Tuberville was joined by a host of Senators in signing this letter. Ninety lawmakers from the U.S. House of Representatives also added their signatures.
