Washington – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has sponsored a resolution in the U.S. Senate condemning the Nicaraguan government's actions against pastors affiliated with Mountain Gateway Order, whose founders are from Alabama. This resolution has also been supported by U.S. Senators Rick Scott, Katie Britt, Ted Cruz, and Kevin Cramer.
The resolution comes in response to recent events where the Nicaraguan government has unjustly imprisoned 13 pastors associated with the evangelical group Mountain Gateway, despite having the government's approval and support. Additionally, the Nicaraguan government has issued three warrants for U.S. citizens associated with the organization.
In a joint statement, Senators Rick Scott, Ted Cruz, and Katie Britt expressed their concerns, stating, "The unjust imprisonment of these religious leaders further confirms the Ortega-Murillo regime’s corruption and coordination with the regimes in Venezuela and Cuba in an oppressive campaign of destabilization in the Western Hemisphere."
Senator Tuberville has been actively involved in addressing this issue, having met with the founders of Mountain Gateway Ministries, Jon Britton “Britt” and Audrey Hancock, in February. The Senators have also called on the Biden administration to implement strong, targeted sanctions on Nicaragua in response to these violations of religious freedoms.
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP Committees.
