Washington, Mar 21 2024 - U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has voted in favor of overturning the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s rule to resume Paraguayan beef imports, as the U.S. Senate passed a Congressional Review Act resolution by a bipartisan vote of 70-25.
Concerns over food processing and sanitary standards in Paraguay, particularly regarding Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), have been raised. Senator Tuberville emphasized the impact on Alabama's cattle industry, stating, "Today is a huge win for Alabama’s cattlemen. Not only did the USDA’s rule jeopardize our domestic beef industry, but it put Americans’ safety at risk."
The decision to block Paraguayan beef imports comes after the Biden administration's announcement in November 2023 that these imports would no longer be banned. The USDA's risk assessment was criticized for using outdated data and overlooking the historical prevalence of FMD outbreaks in Paraguay.
Cattle production is a significant industry in Alabama, with Senator Tuberville highlighting its importance. He expressed his support for the state's cattlemen, recognizing their efforts to provide safe, quality beef for Americans. Senator Tuberville serves on various committees in the United States Senate, including Agriculture, where he advocates for the interests of Alabama's agricultural sector.
The $2.5-billion cattle production industry in Alabama is a vital component of the state's economy, with beef cattle production ranking second in cash receipts among farm commodities. Last year alone, Alabama producers generated $447 million from the sale of cattle and calves.
Senator Tommy Tuberville's vote to block Paraguayan beef imports reflects his commitment to safeguarding American farmers and consumers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards in the domestic beef industry.
