Jaguar Football falls to Troy in Annual “Battle For The Belt”

Troy held South Alabama to a season low in points and total offense as the Trojans picked up a 10-6 victory over the Jaguars in the Annual "Battle For The Belt" Thursday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

South Alabama (5-2, 2-1 SBC) was held without a touchdown and a pair of field goals, while only finishing with 246 total yards of offense and 31 yards on the ground.

Carter Bradley was 29-of-40 through the air for 215 yards and an interception, while Jalen Wayne and Devin Voisin had nine receptions each. D. Voisin nearly recorded his second-straight 100-yard game as he ended the night with 93 yards.  

The Jaguar defense limited Troy to three second-half points and posted season highs in sacks (4) and tackles for loss (8). Trey Kiser led the way with nine total tackles – including six solo – and a tackle for loss. Yam Banks had six tackles, all solo, and recorded his fourth interception of the season. Jalen Jordan and Jaden Voisin also had six tackles. Jamie Sherriff and Charles Coleman III were each credited with 1½ sacks. Two of CJ Rias' four tackles came behind the line of scrimmage.

  • Wayne (22) and Lacy (19) both extended their streaks of consecutive games with a catch on the Jaguars' first drive of the game, and, those streaks rank sixth- and seventh-longest, respectively, in program history
  • The Jaguars were held scoreless in the opening quarter of play for just the second time this season (at Louisiana, 10/1)
  • Billingsly's 5-yard touchdown run I the second quarter was the first rushing TD allowed by the Jags in the red zone since game two of the season at Central Michigan (9/10)
  • Bradley connected on nine of his first 10 passes to start the game
  • Lacy's 15-yard pass with just over three minutes to go in the second quarter marked the first third-down conversion by either team as the two squads had been a combined 0-for-8 to that point
  • Diego Guajardo prevented South from being shut out during the first 30 minutes of play for the first time since the 2020 season with his 41-yard field goal as time expired
  • With the made field goal, Guajardo has now made at least one in 10-straight games
  • The 3 points scored by South Alabama during the opening half were the fewest recorded in the first half this fall and the first time the team hasn't scored a TD during the first two quarters since being shut out vs. Troy (12/5/20)
  • The 53 yards on South's final drive of the second quarter nearly matched the total yards (87) that the Jags had accumulated during their first four drives of the contest
  • Banks recorded his fourth interception of the season to end Troy's third drive of the second half and set South up around midfield
  • The four interceptions by Banks are tied with three other players for second-most in a season and tied for eighth-most in a career
  • As a defense, South now has nine interceptions, six fumble recoveries and 15 total takeaways
  • Over the last five games, the Jag defense has intercepted eight passes – Banks has half of them
  • The six tackles by J. Voisin matched a career high for the safety
  • The nine tackles by Kiser eclipsed his previous best of seven set at Louisiana (10/1/22)
  • Wayne (134 – fourth) passed former Jag Kawaan Baker (126 – 2017-20) and moved into third all-time in career receptions
  • The senior receiver also moved into third-place on the career yards receiving (1,722) list passing former Jags Jeremé Jones (1,655 – 2010-14) and Shavarez Smith (1,688 – 2013-14)
  • With his two field goals, Guajardo now has 37 – which is tied for second – in his career and he is seven shy of Gavin Patterson (2015-18) for second all-time in that category
