As the calendar turns to November, South Alabama hits the road for the first of two road games in the month – this one at Statesboro (Ga.) to face Georgia Southern and first-year head coach Clay Helton on November 5.
Georgia Southern opens their season at home on September 3 against Morgan State before a pair of road games at Nebraska (Sept. 10) and UAB (Sept. 17). They will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule against Ball State (Sept. 24) before conference play on Oct. 1 against Coastal Carolina.
The Eagles were picked to finish fifth in the Sun Belt Conference East Division behind four teams who qualified for bowl games last season – App State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State and Marshall. They will enter the season under Helton, the former USC head coach who led the Trojans to three conference championship games, a Rose Bowl championship (2016) and a Pac-12 conference title in 2017.
They return a roster of five All-Sun Belt selections from 2021 and four who were named preseason all-conference this year. They also had three named to preseason watch lists prior to the start of 2022.
The Eagle return second team selections Justin Ellis (defensive line), Derrick Canteen (defensive back), Anthony Beck II (punter), and Amare Jones (all-purpose) while also returning sixth-year quarterback Kyle Vantrease.
