Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama announced his support for the Immigration Parole Reform Act alongside Senator Chuck Grassley. The legislation aims to address concerns about the use of immigration parole by previous administrations.
Senator Tuberville stated, “The Biden administration made a habit of using dangerous loopholes to let more illegal immigrants into the country. Giving parole to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants is an abuse of power—President Trump is putting an end to this.” He emphasized his commitment to preventing future misuse by joining this legislative effort.
Senator Grassley also commented on the issue, saying, “The Obama and Biden administrations badly abused immigration parole, which was intended to be a temporary and highly discretionary means to enter our country. Under President Trump, parole will no longer be used as a loophole for illegal immigration. However, Congress must also act to prevent any future exploitation.”
The bill has garnered support from several other Republican senators including Katie Britt, Ted Budd, Bill Cassidy, Tom Cotton, Joni Ernst, Josh Hawley, James Lankford, Mike Lee, Bernie Moreno, and Tim Sheehy.
Immigration parole was originally established in 1952 by Congress as a tool for granting temporary entry into the United States under specific circumstances such as urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit. Concerns have been raised that past administrations used this authority beyond its intended scope.
On January 21, 2025, the Trump administration issued a directive aimed at aligning the program with Congress’ original intent.
Senator Tuberville serves on multiple Senate committees including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs.
