U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, representing Alabama, engaged in a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing focused on nominees for positions within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the Trump administration. The nominees discussed were Luke Lindberg for Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs and Devon Westhill for Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Civil Rights. The discussions covered a range of agricultural issues, from trade policies to civil rights.
Addressing the challenges faced by American farmers, Tuberville highlighted the difficulties created by foreign trade, pointing out that “the Ag Department and us, we have a big chore in front of us. We’re losing farmers every day.” He accused the Biden administration of neglecting trade deals, which according to him, has adversely affected the farming community. “We can’t do business as usual,” he remarked, stressing the urgency of action.
On U.S.-foreign trade, Tuberville and nominee Lindberg discussed the impact of inexpensive textile imports on local cotton producers. Lindberg acknowledged the problem and promised to ensure the de minimis exemption is reviewed, stating, “Absolutely, President Trump has taken seriously… the de minimis exemption which has been a tragedy for not only our cotton farmers.” Tuberville supported Lindberg’s commitment, noting the need for better commodity prices.
Civil rights within the USDA were another area of concern, with Tuberville questioning Westhill on his strategy for managing staff who might not align with Trump’s agenda. Westhill responded by emphasizing the importance of a clear vision, stating, “I think the vast majority of the individuals… want to actually enforce civil rights.”
The senator further criticized the import policies of the Biden administration concerning cattle, specifically from Paraguay, citing food safety concerns. In response, Lindberg assured that, though outside his direct role, he would work on ensuring the market analysis and intelligence are robust.
Additionally, Tuberville addressed trade barriers affecting peanut farmers, particularly concerning non-tariff barriers with the European Union. Lindberg pledged cooperation with the USDA and USTR to prioritize market access under Trump’s agenda.
Tommy Tuberville serves on several Senate committees, including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP, and Aging. His focus remains on addressing agricultural and trade challenges affecting his constituents and the wider U.S. farming community.
