U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama engaged with Stephen Vaden and Tyler Clarkson during a U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry hearing. Vaden and Clarkson are nominees for Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, respectively. Discussions centered on domestic trade and the enforcement of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) work requirements.
In his remarks, Senator Tuberville expressed concerns about the challenges farmers face and emphasized the need for a Farm Bill. He praised President Trump for his efforts: “Thank God for the tariffs, [and] for President Trump. He’s trying to right the ship. We’ll see what happens, but we’ve got to help our farmers.”
Tuberville addressed domestic trade barriers affecting Alabama’s peanut growers. He asked Mr. Vaden if he would “commit to ensuring USDA and the U.S. Trade Representative would work together on President Trump’s agenda to reduce trade barriers and prioritize market access for our farmers.” Vaden responded affirmatively, highlighting “phony phytosanitary concerns” as obstacles to market access.
The issue also touched on enforcing SNAP work requirements. Tuberville criticized the Biden administration’s SNAP benefit increases, claiming these encouraged dependency on government assistance. He questioned how nominees would enforce existing work requirements. Vaden noted the statutory nature of the SNAP work requirement, emphasizing that failure to enforce it was contrary to Congress’s intent.
“You have pointed out how successful the program is at giving people a helping hand when they need it, and then working to transition them to self-sufficiency,” Vaden stated.
Clarkson reiterated nearly, referencing the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act: “PRWORA made very clear that there are work requirements associated with SNAP.”
Senator Tuberville concluded by emphasizing fiscal responsibility. “We need to be a precursor for what’s going on in this country,” he said, underscoring the importance of addressing national debt and managing entitlement programs.
Senator Tuberville serves as a member of several key Senate Committees, including Armed Services, Agriculture, and Veterans’ Affairs.
