U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, alongside Senator Mike Crapo from Idaho, has reintroduced the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act. The proposed legislation aims to repeal an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tailpipe emissions rule that was finalized under the Biden-Harris Administration. This rule is described as a mandate pushing for electric vehicle production and reducing gas-powered car availability.
Senator Tuberville previously supported this bill during the 118th Congress. He stated, “Working families are still struggling from Joe Biden’s reckless economic policies,” adding that “Washington bureaucrats shouldn’t be telling Alabamians what kind of car they should buy.” He believes the CARS Act will counteract previous climate-focused policies and restore purchasing autonomy for Americans.
Senator Crapo echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the EPA’s rule-making process as promoting a “radical green agenda” detrimental to consumer choice. According to Crapo, such regulations disadvantage American consumers while benefiting international competitors like China.
The initiative also has backing from several other Republican senators including John Barrasso, Katie Britt, Ted Budd, Shelley Moore Capito, Bill Cassidy, Kevin Cramer, Ted Cruz, Steve Daines, Joni Ernst, Deb Fischer, John Hoeven, Jim Justice, Cynthia Lummis, Roger Marshall, Markwayne Mullin, Pete Ricketts, Jim Risch, Rick Scott and Dan Sullivan.
The American Petroleum Institute and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers have expressed support for this legislative effort.
