U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has introduced the Honey Integrity Act, aimed at protecting domestic honey producers and beekeepers from counterfeit foreign imports. The legislation seeks to establish a standard identity for honey and mandates that the Secretary of Health and Human Services report any enforcement against adulterated or misbranded honey to Congress.

“Honey is one of nature’s greatest antioxidants, providing many wonderful health benefits,” said Senator Tuberville. “America’s beekeepers and honey producers work tirelessly to ensure that we have access to pure, quality honey.”

The act is supported by several organizations including the American Honey Producers Association and the Alabama Farmers Federation. Blake Thaxton, Director of Alabama Farmers Federation’s Bee and Honey Division, expressed gratitude for the legislative effort, stating it is a step toward ensuring consumers receive unadulterated honey.

Rep. Greg Steube is leading companion legislation in the House alongside Rep. Jimmy Panetta. “I’m introducing the Honey Integrity Act in the House to crack down on the mislabeling and sale of fake products to American consumers,” said Rep. Steube.

The bill also receives support from other industry representatives like Robert Russell of the Alabama Commercial Beekeepers Association, who emphasized issues caused by adulterated honey products misleading consumers.

Steven Coy, President of the American Honey Producers Association, noted that this legislation addresses long-standing issues with adulteration in the market.

Patty Sundberg from the American Beekeeping Federation echoed these sentiments, emphasizing support for legislation that protects U.S. beekeepers and consumers from economically adulterated honey imports.

Senator Tuberville’s ongoing efforts include targeting illegal fish imports and advocating for fair trade practices to protect domestic agricultural industries.
