U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has recently spoken at a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, calling for increased oversight of veteran care programs. He emphasized the need for alternative treatments, specifically mentioning Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, for veterans suffering from PTSD. Additionally, Tuberville highlighted the need for better oversight of the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to ensure effective care for veterans.
During the committee hearing, Jim Lorraine, President and CEO of America’s Warrior Partnership, testified as a witness. Lorraine discussed the lack of transparency in the current oversight process for these grants, stating, “I think if there is oversight, it’s not transparent.” He pointed out that America’s Warrior Partnership participates in all VA meetings and submits reports but is uncertain about their standing compared to others.
Senator Tuberville acknowledged the gravity of veteran suicide, noting that despite the resources allocated, improvements have been minimal. “Since I’ve been on this committee now going on five years, we have not improved prevention of [veterans’] suicide,” he said. He underscored the importance of having dedicated staff at hospitals and care units who are committed to supporting veterans.
Lorraine noted the need for more audits, sharing an example of a grantee misappropriating $50,000 from the grant, saying, “I think more audits—I hate to say that—but, I mean, I think more audits for organizations with clear guidelines” are necessary.
Senator Tuberville continues to be an advocate for veterans, serving on multiple committees, including Veterans’ Affairs, and emphasizing the critical importance of veteran care.
