Texas State defeated South Alabama 5-1 in the opening game of their softball series at Jaguar Field, according to an April 2 report. Texas State pitcher Madison Azua struck out eight batters during the game.
The result is significant for both teams as they continue conference play. South Alabama now holds a record of 23-16 overall and 7-3 in the Sun Belt Conference, while Texas State moves to 23-15 overall and 5-5 in conference games.
South Alabama head coach Becky Clark said after the loss: “We gave away too many opportunities tonight. I thought we had plenty of chances and just didn’t get it done. We have to take care of the little stuff going into tomorrow.” The Jaguars threatened early with runners on base but were unable to score, as Azua worked out of jams throughout the game.
Key moments included a strong defensive play by Texas State’s Harley Vestal, who prevented a home run in the second inning, and unearned runs scored by Texas State in the third inning following errors by South Alabama. Presley Lively drove in South Alabama’s only run with an RBI single but was later thrown out trying to advance bases. Aiyana Coleman hit her tenth home run for Texas State in the sixth inning, helping secure their lead.
Statistically, Lively was one of four Jaguars with a hit and drove in their lone run. For Texas State, Keely Williams went two-for-three at bat and drove in three runs. Gracie Dees recorded her twelfth double of the season for South Alabama, tying her for third-most doubles by a freshman at the school.
South Alabama will face Texas State again on Friday for game two of their series.
