U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville and U.S. Representative Mike Rogers have introduced the Talladega National Forest Expansion Act. This legislative proposal aims to expand the proclamation boundary of the Talladega National Forest by approximately 50,000 acres across three counties in East Alabama. The legislation seeks to give the U.S. Forest Service the authority to acquire land from willing sellers, which could boost local economies and conservation efforts.

Senator Tuberville emphasized Alabama's diverse natural attractions, noting, "The Talladega National Forest is one of many reasons to visit Alabama...we have to make sure we take the right steps to conserve our resources."

Representative Rogers highlighted the potential benefits by saying, “The proposed expansion to complete the southern portion of the Pinhoti Trail will provide a large boost to our local outdoor tourism industry."

The Alabama Trails Foundation, through its President Paul DeMarco, expressed support, stating, "The expansion of the Talladega National Forest represents a legacy of commitment to outdoor recreation and conservation."

Local governmental bodies such as the Talladega County Commission, Coosa County Commission, Clay County Commission, and the Alabama Trails Foundation have endorsed the legislation.

This initiative follows the Talladega National Forest's history, established in 1936 with current boundaries comprising the Oakmulgee and Talladega Divisions. The forest covers 400,000 acres, with about 200,000 acres owned by the U.S. government. This legislation is also aimed at enhancing the Pinhoti Trail, Alabama's longest-distance hiking trail, by transforming 15 miles of road walks into off-road trails, thereby improving the trail experience and hiker safety.

Senator Tommy Tuberville serves Alabama in the United States Senate and is an active member of several committees.
