U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has honored Navy Second Class Officer Stephen Woodfin as the "Veteran of the Month" for February. The recognition highlights Woodfin's service in the Vietnam War and his contributions to his community after returning home.
In a video message, Senator Tuberville praised Petty Officer First Class Stephen Woodfin, saying, “America’s military is the greatest in the world because of men and women who take pride in their role to keep us safe. No one demonstrates this better than Petty Officer First Class Stephen Woodfin of Harvest, Alabama."
Woodfin was drafted into the Navy in 1968 and began his training far from his small-town roots in Alabama, undergoing basic training in Nashville and San Diego. He described this transition as being like "a country boy in hog heaven." During his four-year service in the South Pacific during the Vietnam War, he experienced firsthand the challenges of combat but remains proud of his military service.
Reflecting on his time in the military, Woodfin noted that it allowed him to meet some remarkable individuals. Before returning home in 1972, he met his wife, whom he describes as "the best thing that ever happened to him." After returning to civilian life, Woodfin embraced various roles including husband, father, postal serviceman, and teacher.
Senator Tuberville recognizes an Alabama veteran each month for their service and contributions. Constituents are encouraged to nominate veterans by submitting information to Senator Tuberville’s office via email at press_office@tuberville.senate.gov.
Senator Tommy Tuberville serves Alabama in the U.S. Senate and is part of several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP (Health Education Labor Pensions), and Aging Committees.
