U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, alongside U.S. Representative Dale Strong and U.S. Senator Katie Britt, introduced a resolution to mark the fourth anniversary of Redstone Arsenal's selection as the preferred location for the U.S. Space Command (SPACECOM). Despite this designation by the Secretary of the Air Force in 2020, SPACECOM remains in Colorado due to a decision by the Biden administration in July 2023.
Senator Tuberville has been advocating for SPACECOM's relocation to Huntsville since his entry into Congress in 2021. He argues that Huntsville is the optimal site for SPACECOM based on various evaluations and studies conducted by military leaders and agencies. Tuberville stated, "Four years ago, the Secretary of the Air Force declared Huntsville, Alabama, as the best place for U.S. Space Command over six other locations considered."
Senator Britt echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that "Huntsville finished first in both the Air Force’s Evaluation Phase and Selection Phase," and criticized what she perceives as a politically motivated decision by the current administration.
The original site selection process involved extensive evaluations across 66 locations in 26 states, with Redstone Arsenal emerging as number one due to its infrastructure and capability to enhance national security.
Investigations by both the Department of Defense Inspector General (DoD IG) and Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that Redstone Arsenal was selected through a fair process compliant with federal law. These findings have been supported by statements from General James H. Dickinson of SPACECOM during Senate Armed Services Committee hearings.
Despite ongoing efforts led by Senator Tuberville to finalize SPACECOM's move to Alabama, political disagreements continue over its permanent location.
