U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has joined forces with Senator John Cornyn of Texas and 42 other Republican colleagues to introduce the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This proposed legislation aims to allow individuals who have concealed carry privileges in their home state to exercise those rights in any other state that permits concealed carry, provided they adhere to the laws of that state.
Senator Tuberville had previously cosponsored this legislation when it was first introduced in February 2023. In his statement, he criticized federal officials for over-regulating firearms, saying, "For too long, federal officials have misplaced their priorities by over-regulating the use of firearms that Americans are legally entitled to own." He added, "The constant malignment of Americans exercising a constitutional right has to end."
Senator Cornyn expressed his support for the bill by highlighting its importance for gun owners: "The Lone Star State has long championed our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, and gun owners in Texas and across the country should not have that fundamental right violated when they cross state lines." He emphasized that the legislation would ease burdens on law-abiding citizens and enable them to carry concealed firearms across states with such permissions.
The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is backed by several organizations including the National Rifle Association (NRA), the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), and Gun Owners of America (GOA).
In addition to Senators Tuberville and Cornyn, a wide array of U.S. Senators from various states have signed on as cosponsors. These include Jim Banks from Indiana, John Barrasso from Wyoming, Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee, John Boozman from Arkansas, Katie Britt from Alabama, Ted Budd from North Carolina, Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia, Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, Tom Cotton from Arkansas among others.
Senator Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP (Health Education Labor Pensions), and Aging Committees.
