Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) addressed the Senate floor to emphasize the necessity of passing the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). In his speech, Tuberville pointed out significant conservative achievements within the NDAA, such as reducing funding for gender transition surgeries and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in the military. He also reiterated his support for President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.
Tuberville stated, "We need a military that is 100% focused on protecting our country and enhancing national security—not implementing a woke Biden agenda." He expressed concern over what he perceives as an inappropriate focus on social issues within the military under the current administration.
The senator praised the Senate Armed Services Committee's version of the NDAA for including a 4.5% pay raise for military service members and advancing security initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region. Tuberville criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for not bringing the NDAA to a vote sooner, questioning why it had been delayed for six months.
Tuberville also commented on Pete Hegseth's nomination as Secretary of Defense by President Trump. He described Hegseth as "smart," "battle-tested," and someone who could inspire young recruits due to his experience on the battlefield. Tuberville expressed confidence that Hegseth would prioritize America's military readiness and address recruitment challenges.
In closing, Tuberville looked forward to what he termed a new era beginning next January with President Trump's return to office. He urged prioritizing national security over partisan interests and foreign conflicts.
