U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has called on Congress to take action to regulate Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and protect student-athletes. In an op-ed published in Outkick, Tuberville emphasized the urgent need for legislation to address this issue. As a former football coach with 40 years of experience, Tuberville understands the importance of preserving the integrity of college football.

Tuberville expressed his admiration for Coach Nick Saban, who recently retired as the greatest coach in college sports history. He highlighted Saban's remarkable achievements, including seven National Championships and 11 SEC Championships. Tuberville, who had the distinction of defeating Saban four times and maintaining a winning record against him, described Saban as a great friend and fierce competitor.

Discussing the impact of NIL regulations on college athletics, Tuberville echoed the sentiments of Colorado's Coach Deion Sanders, who said, "The game has changed so much that it chased the GOAT away." Tuberville acknowledged the need for student-athletes to have the opportunity to earn money but emphasized the lack of nationwide rules governing NIL. Currently, 39 states have passed or proposed conflicting laws on this issue, creating an uneven playing field for universities and student-athletes.

Tuberville and Senator Joe Manchin have been working on a solution to address this issue for years. They introduced the Protecting Athletes, Schools, and Sports (PASS) Act, which aims to establish a single national standard for adapting to NIL in college sports. The act would ensure the end of pay for play and implement a uniform contract for all NIL deals. Additionally, it would require universities to honor the original scholarships offered to student-athletes, regardless of their NIL deal status.

The PASS Act is the result of extensive engagement with coaches, educators, parents, and student-athletes. Tuberville and Manchin have taken into account various perspectives to create guidelines that protect student-athletes and maintain the integrity of college football.

By passing the PASS Act, Congress can prevent a race to the bottom and save college sports from being dictated by a few states. It would establish a fair and consistent national standard for NIL contracts, providing clarity and equality for universities and student-athletes across the country.

Tuberville's op-ed highlights the importance of addressing the NIL issue and the significance of the PASS Act in preserving the future of college athletics. With bipartisan support, this legislation offers a solution that protects student-athletes, ensures fairness in competition, and upholds the values of college sports.
