U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has recognized U.S. Army Sergeant Lloyd Michael Austin of Mobile as the February "Veteran of the Month." In a video released by Senator Tuberville, he commended Sergeant Austin for his service to the military and his local community.

Senator Tuberville acknowledged the challenges that many veterans face when they return home, stating, "Many of our veterans come home with scars—including scars you can't see. After fighting America's battles, they come home to fight their own personal battles." He highlighted Sergeant Austin's personal journey, stating, "One American warrior who knows this well is Sergeant Lloyd Michael Austin of Mobile."

Sergeant Austin served as a truck driver for multiple combat missions and was later diagnosed with PTSD. After returning to Alabama, he faced a different kind of battle as he struggled with substance abuse. Senator Tuberville shared, "He became isolated from family and friends, and even attempted to take his life." However, Sergeant Austin has since overcome these challenges and has been sober for over 17 years.

Today, Sergeant Austin uses his own experiences to help other veterans who are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. He works with Vets Recover, visiting hospitals and treatment centers to provide support and encouragement. Senator Tuberville highlighted Sergeant Austin's special companion during these visits, stating, "With special help from his poodle and service dog, Ivy, his story has given hope to many Alabamians during some of the darkest moments in their lives."

Alabama is grateful to have compassionate servant leaders like Sergeant Austin, who use their personal experiences to make a difference in the lives of others. Senator Tuberville's Veteran of the Month series aims to recognize and honor Alabama veterans for their service and contribution to their community.

Constituents can nominate an Alabama veteran to be considered for this recognition by emailing their information to Senator Tuberville's office at press_office@tuberville.senate.gov. Senator Tuberville serves as a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans' Affairs, and HELP Committees, representing Alabama in the United States Senate.
