U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has introduced the Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, which aims to prevent men from participating in athletic events intended for females. This legislation modifies eligibility requirements for amateur sports governing organizations.

The bill was introduced in response to concerns about the fairness and safety of women's sports. Senator Tuberville expressed his dismay at the recent policy change by USA Boxing, which now allows men to compete against women. He stated, "Men should not be competing in women’s sports at any level—and especially not in a sport like boxing. Whether in little league or the Olympics, it’s unsafe, it’s unfair, and it’s just plain wrong. This bill will ensure that the Olympics are fair to American women who train their whole lives to represent our country on the world stage."

U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) has also introduced companion legislation in the House. He emphasized the need to prevent organizations that choose to ignore biological differences from being recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Representative Steube stated, "We must combat the erasure of women’s sports by standing for truth, reality, safety, and fairness."

The legislation has garnered support from various organizations, including Alliance Defending Freedom, American Principles Project, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, Heritage Action, Independent Council on Women’s Sport (ICONS), Independent Women’s Forum (IWF), International Consortium on Female Sport (ICFS), Women’s Declaration International USA, and Women’s Liberation Front.

Riley Gaines, a 12-time NCAA All American Swimmer and Independent Women’s Forum Ambassador, expressed gratitude for the leadership shown by Senator Tuberville and Representative Steube. She highlighted her own experience of competing against a male athlete and stressed the importance of fairness, privacy, and safety for girls and women in sports.

The background of the legislation includes the recent update by USA Boxing to their National Rule Book, which now allows transgender individuals to compete in the female category under certain conditions. Senator Tuberville's bill aims to address concerns about the erasure of women's sports and ensure fair competition.

As a former educator, mentor, and coach for over 40 years, Senator Tuberville has been a vocal advocate for the future of girls' and women's sports. He has consistently supported the preservation of Title IX protections, which ensure equal opportunities for female athletes. In March 2023, he led the reintroduction of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, which aimed to preserve Title IX protections and ensure fair competition in women's sports. The bill passed the House in April 2023.

Senator Tommy Tuberville's legislation seeks to address the concerns surrounding men competing in women's sports at all levels. By modifying eligibility requirements for amateur sports governing organizations, this bill aims to ensure fairness, privacy, and safety for female athletes. The support from various organizations and athletes underscores the importance of preserving women's sports and providing equal opportunities for female athletes.
