After winning setting a new personal best and claiming his fourth career race victory, South Alabama men's cross country runner Kirami Yego was named the Sun Belt Conference Runners of the Week on Wednesday as announced by the league office.
Yego is the second Jaguar male runner to earn the award this fall, joining Xavier Johnson who was named the league runner of the week on the men's side on September 14. The selection is the fifth of Yego's Jag career and marks 49th all-time for the program. The five runner of the week selections rank as third-most for a career by a South Alabama male runner, trailing just Micah Tirop (8) and Vincent Rono (6)
In his second race of the fall, Yego took home top honors in the men's 5-mile Gold race Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame and held at Burk Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. With his win, Yego helped the Jaguar men record a top-10 finish, their third of the fall, among the 14-team field.
The win marked the fourth of Yego's collegiate career and his eighth top-10 finish. His time of 23:23.2 was also a new personal best and the third-fastest time at the distance in program history. Yego dominated the 124-runner field as he held either the first or second position at each split.
South will next compete at the Crimson Classic hosted by Alabama, its final regular-season meet, which will be held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. The men's 8k race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, October 29, with the women's 6k slated to follow at 9:20 a.m.
