Nine former South Alabama baseball student-athletes are competing in professional baseball across the major and minor leagues.
In 57 games played with the St. Louis Cardinals this season, Brendan Donovan is batting .307 with 14 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 26 RBIs, 28 runs scored, two stolen bases, and .411 on-base percentage. Donovan has hit .321 with eight doubles, one triple, one home run, 17 RBIs, 15 runs scored, one stolen base and .402 OBP in the month of June, and has hit safely in 19 of 28 contests in that span. He posted a career-high four RBIs on June 4 at Chicago, and recorded a career-high four hits on June 14 against Pittsburgh. A poll conducted by MLB.com on June 16 listed Donovan second among favorites to win National League Rookie of the Year.
Right-hander Matt Peacock has made seven relief appearances with the Kansas City Royals and made two appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks before being purchased by the Royals on April 24. He has recorded six strikeouts in 10 innings pitched with a 5.40 ERA between the two clubs this season.
Outfielder Travis Swaggerty made his MLB debut on June 7 against Detroit, and collected his first career hit on June 9 at Atlanta. He appeared in five games before being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on June 13. Swaggerty is batting .277 with six doubles, three triples, six home runs, 32 RBIs, 25 runs scored and five stolen bases in 47 games with Indianapolis this season.
Left-hander Locke St. John was selected off waivers by the New York Mets from the Chicago Cubs on May 10. St. John signed as a free agent with Chicago on Nov. 28, 2021, and appeared in one game where he struck out four in two innings on April 30 this season at Milwaukee. New York optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, and designated him for assignment on June 29. In 15 relief appearances between Triple-A Iowa and Triple-A Syracuse, St. John is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 26 strikeouts against 13 walks in 22 2/3 innings pitched this season.
Right-hander Zach Greene is 5-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 42 strikeouts and 16 walks in 30 innings pitched this season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Ethan Wilson is batting .236 with 12 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 27 RBIs, 25 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in 67 games played with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
In 60 games played with the Asheville Tourists, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, Michael Sandle is hitting .272 with 17 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, 44 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
Left-hander Tyler Samaniego is 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA and eight saves in 23 relief appearances between Advanced-A Greensboro and Double-A Altoona in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Samaniego has recorded 37 strikeouts against 13 walks in 28 innings pitched this season, including 13 strikeouts and just two walks at Altoona, where he was promoted on May 24.
