University of South Alabama football's Darrell Luter Jr. picked up his second preseason honor as he was selected First-Team All-Sun Belt by Phil Steele Publications on Wednesday. Luter was also a first-team all-league selection by Athlon Sports earlier this summer.
Four other Jags – Keith Gallmon Jr. (safety), Wy'Kevious Thomas (defensive line), Jalen Wayne (wide receiver) and Diego Guajardo (placekicker) – also earned preseason recognition from the publication as they were each named third-team.
Luter was named second-team All-America by Pro Football Focus and was an honorable mention All-America selection by both Phil Steele Publications and Pro Football Network as well after ranking 24th on PFF's College 101 list. He was also a first-team all-conference selection, and received first-team all-league recognition from Phil Steele, PFF and PFN last fall, after also being selected as the SBC Defensive Player of the Year by PFF.
In addition to posting 21 total stops, the six-foot corner back paced the Jaguars in both interceptions (4) and passes defensed (10), while leading the Sun Belt in the latter category and ranking second in interceptions per contest. Luter ended up third in the nation in passes defended per outing while ranking seventh in interceptions per game.
Wayne earned honorable mention honors on the All-Sun Belt team in 2021. He posted 53 catches for 630 yards, finishing second in each category, and scored a pair of touchdowns
Gallmon. – who received preseason first-team honors from Athlon as well – earned him Second Team All-Sun Belt honors at the end of last season after starting all 12 games, and posting 59 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss. He also tallied two pass break-ups, an interception and a fumble recovery while also finishing second on the team in total tackles after leading the Jaguars in four games, tied for most on the team. Gallmon posted a season-high nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss against Texas State to highlight the season.
Joining Galmon from the defensive unit was Thomas who posted 49 total tackles on his way to honorable mention all-conference honors last season as a redshirt freshman. He was also credited with 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and three quarterback hurries.
Wayne earned honorable mention honors on the All-Sun Belt team in 2021. He posted 53 catches for 630 yards, finishing second in each category, and scored a pair of touchdowns. Guajardo rounded out the third team selections after leading the Jaguars with 69 points on 12-of-17 field goals and 33-of-35 extra point attempts. He also recorded 23 touchbacks on 59 kickoffs.
