Nine former University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes are currently competing in Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. Two former Jags, Brendan Donovan and Matt Peacock, are active on MLB rosters.
In 30 games with the Cardinals, Donovan is batting .297 with six doubles, one home run, nine RBIs, 14 RBIs, one stolen base and a .429 on-base percentage. Donovan made his MLB debut on April 25 this season as a pinch-runner against the New York Mets, and recorded his first career hit on April 28 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Seven games later he hit his first career home run, which came on May 10 in St. Louis, Mo., against the Baltimore Orioles.
Peacock played the 2021 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and also opened this season in Arizona before being purchased by the Kansas City Royals on April 24. Peacock has struck out three and walked two in three innings with the Royals in four relief appearances. He made two relief appearances with the Diamondbacks before being purchased by the Royals. The Royals placed Peacock on the 10-day disabled list on May 30.
Left-hander Locke St. John was selected off waivers by the New York Mets from the Chicago Cubs on May 10. St. John signed as a free agent with Chicago on Nov. 28, 2021, and appeared in one game where he struck out four in two innings on April 30 this season at Milwaukee. New York optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, where he has made five relief appearances and struck out eight batters against two walks in 7 1/3 innings pitched.
Travis Swaggerty is batting .266 with four doubles, two triples, three home runs, 19 RBIs, 18 runs scored and five stolen bases in 33 games played with the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Right-hander Zach Greene is 4-0 with a 4.26 ERA and 23 strikeouts against 12 walks in 14 relief appearances, which spans 19 innings for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders – the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Ethan Wilson is batting .247 with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs, 18 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 41 games played with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Michael Sandle is batting .268 with 14 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 24 RBIs, 31 runs scored and four stolen bases in 41 games played with the Asheville Tourists, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.
Left-hander Tyler Samaniego opened the season with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he went 1-1 with four saves and a 0.53 ERA in 14 relief appearances. He was promoted to the Double-A Altoona Curve on May 24, where he has recorded one strikeout in one inning pitched in his lone appearance.
Right-hander Tyler Carr has made eight relief appearances with the Reading Fightin Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Carr has recorded four strikeouts against six walks in 10 1/3 innings pitched this season.
