South Alabama women’s basketball lost to Arkansas State on Saturday in Jonesboro, with a final score of 74-61. The Jaguars now hold a record of 7-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Arkansas State improves to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Cordasia Harris led South Alabama early, scoring eight points and collecting two rebounds in the first quarter. Despite this strong start, Arkansas State’s Zyion Shannon closed out the period with a six-point run in the last 30 seconds, giving the Red Wolves a 16-12 lead.
During the second quarter, Harris achieved a career milestone by reaching her 750th NCAA rebound.
Harris finished the game with her fifth consecutive double-double, posting 22 points and 12 rebounds. It was her second game this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also shot efficiently from the field, making nine of her twelve attempts.
Diawna Carter-Hartley contributed with 15 points for South Alabama, shooting four-for-eight from the floor and two-for-three from three-point range.
Head coach Yolisha Jackson commented after the game: “A loss is never good, but a positive thing was that we kept the best team in the country in three-point attempts under their average. We struggled to finish in the paint tonight, and that’s something we can control coming off this road trip. We played one of the top teams in the Sun Belt, and I look forward to the challenge of seeing them on our floor.”
The Jaguars will return to action after a holiday break when they face ULM on Thursday, January 1 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, Louisiana.
