South Alabama women’s basketball will face Alcorn State in the first round of the 2026 Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) at 3 p.m. CDT on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi, according to a March 16 announcement from the WNIT. This marks South Alabama’s first postseason appearance since 2019.
The tournament berth is the fifth WNIT appearance in program history for South Alabama. The team’s last participation was in 2019, when they advanced to the second round before losing to Wyoming by a score of 78-71.
South Alabama enters this year’s WNIT with a season record of 16 wins and 18 losses. The team had a seven-game winning streak before being eliminated by James Madison University in the Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals. During that tournament run, Chrysta Narcisse was named to the All-Tournament team, and the Jaguars averaged shooting percentages of 41.6% from the field, 36.5% from three-point range, and 78.9% from the free throw line.
Key contributors for South Alabama include Amyah Sutton with an average of 11.67 points per game, Cordasia Harris leading with 8.76 rebounds per game and recording 54 blocks, Daniela Gonzalez with 89 assists, and Diawna Carter-Hartley who has tallied 51 steals this season.
Historically, South Alabama holds a record of seven wins and four losses against Alcorn State; their most recent meeting ended in a narrow defeat for South Alabama on December 11, 2002. Alcorn State is led by Nakia Cheatham, who averages team highs in points (13.17), rebounds (7.60), steals (71), blocks (31), and minutes played (936).
