South Alabama women’s basketball will play against James Madison University on Saturday at the Atlantic Union Bank Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Jaguars currently hold a 9-11 overall record and are 2-8 in conference play, while JMU stands at 15-8 overall and 7-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
The teams have met three times before, with South Alabama yet to secure a win against JMU. Their most recent meeting was on February 5, 2025, when the Jaguars lost by a score of 76-62 at the Mitchell Center. Last season, JMU went on to win the Sun Belt regular season title but fell to Belmont in the WNIT Quarterfinals.
South Alabama enters Saturday’s contest after a close 60-57 loss to Appalachian State on Thursday. This marked their fourth game out of the last five decided by five points or fewer. Two players reached career highs during that game: Daniela Gonzalez scored 21 points and Tamara Ortiz tallied six assists. The team’s backcourt has been effective defensively, registering a season-high 13 steals against App State and ranking second in the Sun Belt for three-point percentage defense at 26.8%.
James Madison comes into this matchup following a decisive 96-45 victory over Louisiana. They have also recorded notable conference wins over Marshall (80-43) and Georgia Southern (67-60). Peyton McDaniel has been one of JMU’s standout performers this season, ranking among the top thirty nationally in field-goal attempts, total points scored, and three-point attempts. Other key contributors include Brianna McLeod, Ashanti Barnes, and Bree Robinson.
