South Alabama is set to host Southeastern Louisiana for a midweek baseball contest on March 10 at Stanky Field. The Jaguars, with an 11-5 record, will face the Lions, who are currently 9-7, marking their second meeting this season.
The matchup continues a long-standing series between the two teams that began in 1984. South Alabama leads the all-time series with 46 wins to Southeastern Louisiana’s 26. Their most recent encounter was on February 24 in Hammond, Louisiana, where the Jaguars secured a 9-7 victory. In recent years, however, Southeastern Louisiana has had an edge, winning six of the last eleven games since 2017.
Southeastern Louisiana enters the game on a strong note, riding a five-game win streak and having won eight of their last nine games. The Lions recently opened Southland Conference play by taking two out of three games at Northwestern State and sweeping both ULM and Grambling State in consecutive series.
For Wednesday’s game, South Alabama is expected to start left-handed pitcher Hayden O’Dell (1-0 record with a 5.23 ERA), while Southeastern Louisiana will likely start left-hander Nik Toups (0-0 record with a 7.84 ERA). Offensively, South Alabama has shown strength in clutch situations this season. The team is hitting .309 with runners in two-out situations and has driven in nearly half of its runs under those circumstances. Brennon Wright leads the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.475), hits (28), and on-base percentage (.581). Blake Guerin leads the team with five home runs and seventeen runs batted in. On the mound, pitchers Daniel Gonzalez (9 strikeouts), Hayden O’Dell (8 strikeouts), and Mitchell Heer (11 strikeouts) have each set new career highs for strikeouts this year.
