South Alabama will play against Alabama State in a midweek baseball game scheduled for Wednesday night, April 7, at 6:00 p.m. Central Time in Montgomery.
The matchup continues South Alabama’s road stretch and features two teams with recent conference action. South Alabama holds a 19-13 overall record and is even at 6-6 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Alabama State stands at 14-16 overall and has a 5-7 record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
South Alabama leads the all-time series between the two programs with a record of 24 wins to six over 31 games. The Jaguars previously had a seven-game win streak against the Hornets from June 2016 through April 2022. Last season, the teams split their meetings, with Alabama State winning the most recent contest by one run. After this week’s game, the Hornets are set to visit Stanky Field on May 5 for another matchup.
Alabama State enters after winning its SWAC series over Arkansas – Pine Bluff but lost the final game of that set by a wide margin. Earlier this season, they swept the Andre Dawson Classic and have recorded victories over Southern as well as Georgia State from Sun Belt Conference competition. Both South Alabama and Alabama State have played similar opponents this year; while South defeated both UAB and Alabama, the Hornets lost those matchups.
Probable starting pitchers are Hayden O’Dell (1-2, ERA of 5.96) for South Alabama and Joe Dollinshek (0-1, ERA of 6.28) for Alabama State. O’Dell will make his eighth start after allowing two earned runs across five innings in his last outing.
Recent performances include Stewart Puckett hitting .407 during his current seven-game hitting streak and Blake Guerin tying for first place in home runs within Sun Belt play after hitting his eleventh homer of the season last weekend.
