South Alabama men’s tennis defeated Southern Miss by a score of 4-0 on March 22 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The win brings South Alabama’s overall record to 6-8. The Jaguars secured the doubles point with victories from Accossatto and Bouyacoub, as well as Frumholz and Raemdonck. In singles play, Juan Accossatto, Braden Hannig, and Deren Yigin each recorded wins to help clinch the match for South Alabama.
Head coach Nick Brochu said, “It’s always a good rivalry with Southern Miss. We had to stay focused because they’re an explosive team. Getting the doubles point was key for us. Then we went into singles and had some momentum. We got some first sets and kept the others close. You could feel it on all six courts. It was a great battle everywhere. At the end, the finish line was right there and we just had to push. It came down to our captain, Braden. He kept pushing and won it in a tiebreaker.”
With this victory, South Alabama improved its all-time record against Southern Miss to 21-4 and has now beaten the Golden Eagles in seven of their last eight meetings. Accossatto now holds a winning singles record at 7-6 for the season, while Hannig and Yigin have both reached .500 in singles play.
South Alabama is scheduled to host Mississippi Valley State on Thursday, March 26, with first serve set for 3 p.m.
