South Alabama Men’s Tennis secured a 7-0 win over Alcorn State on Wednesday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. This victory marks the team’s second consecutive win and brings their season record to 4-5.
The match began with doubles play, where South Alabama took two out of three matches. The pair Grime and Holl from Alcorn State defeated Bouyacoub and Hannig of South Alabama in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). However, Accossatto and Yigin won their match 6-3, while Caby and Raemdonck posted a 6-1 victory.
In singles competition, South Alabama swept all six matches. Braden Hannig defeated Griffiths 6-3, 6-3; Juan Accossatto beat Holl 6-3, 6-2; Harold van Raemdonck won against Grime 6-0, 6-1; Clement Caby overcame Juarez in straight sets; Deren Yigin shut out Jones; and Bouyacoub bested Thomas.
This contest was the first meeting between South Alabama and Alcorn State in men’s tennis. With this result, South Alabama leads the series 1-0.
Several players improved their individual records with these wins. Juan Accossatto, Braden Hannig, and Deren Yigin now have singles records above .500 for the season. Harold van Raemdonck also advanced his doubles record to 5-2.
Head coach Nick Brochu commented on the team’s performance: “Good win today. I told the guys to focus on their court regardless on the scoreboard, and we did. We had a good win last weekend and we wanted to keep the momentum going. I thought the guys did a really good job today.”
South Alabama will travel next to face Tulane on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. CT.
