South Alabama Men’s Tennis was defeated by Florida Atlantic University 4-1 on Thursday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts in Mobile, Alabama. The Jaguars now hold a 2-2 record for the season.
In doubles play, South Alabama dropped both completed matches. The FAU pair of Havlicek and Pazdera beat Hannig and Yiggin 6-3, while Hodzic and Pignaton from FAU won against Caby and Frumholz 6-0.
For singles, Braden Hannig earned the only point for South Alabama by defeating Pazdera of FAU 7-5, 6-4. Other singles results included Goity Zapico (FAU) defeating Accossatto (USA) 6-3, 7-5; Havlicek (FAU) overcoming Raemdonck (USA) in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; and Myslivec (FAU) winning over Caby (USA) 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Jules Caby made his collegiate debut for South Alabama during this match.
Juan Accossatto and Harold van Raemdonck were leading their doubles match before it was stopped due to clinch rules. Deren Yigin also led in his unfinished singles match.
Braden Hannig improved his singles record to 3-1 this season.
Nick Brochu commented on the match: “Every year it’s a big battle against FAU. We came out a little flat in doubles. Against teams like FAU, that’s not going to work at all. In singles, we were looking pretty good. We won four first sets, but we kind of settled and had to start again. On three of those four, we lost the second set. We need to work on keeping our foot on the pedal. Overall, it was a very even match, but FAU played better than us on big points, and that was the difference. We’re getting better, but we’ve still got work to do.”
South Alabama is scheduled to host UAB on Wednesday, February 4 with first serve at 2 p.m. CT.
