The South Alabama men’s basketball program announced on Apr. 4 the signing of Swiss guard Diego Roman to its roster for the 2026-27 season.
Roman, who is from Morges-Saint-Prex, Switzerland, brings professional experience from playing with Starwings Basket Regio Basel in Switzerland’s top division. During the 2025–26 season, he played in 19 games and started in 18 of them. He averaged nearly 28 minutes per game and contributed with averages of 10.7 points on over fifty percent shooting, along with 6.6 rebounds and 6.3 assists per contest. Roman also added defensive presence by averaging almost two steals per game.
He scored in double figures ten times during the season, including two games where he reached nineteen points each. His playmaking skills were highlighted by four games with at least ten assists and a single-game high of eleven assists. On the boards, his best performance was fourteen rebounds against BBC Monthey.
Riley Conroy said about Roman: “Diego exemplifies versatility and possesses both a high skill level and IQ,” adding that “He is dynamic in transition and will be impactful on the glass. We are pumped to get Diego here with us.”
Internationally, Roman has played for Switzerland’s U16 and U20 national teams. In summer competition during 2024, he averaged nearly ten points as well as five rebounds across six games—including a standout twenty-point effort against Azerbaijan.
Roman began his career with Morges-Saint-Prex Red Devils before moving to France to play for JL Bourg’s U21 team; later signing professionally with Aix-Maurienne Savoie Basket and Starwings Basel. He was part of a French ProA U21 championship team in 2024 and earned finalist honors in Switzerland’s NLB league.
He is the fourth addition to South Alabama this month alongside transfers Owen Kenney, Aaron Goldstein, and Jalen Langsy.
