South Alabama men’s basketball will close out its regular season at home against Southern Miss on Friday, February 27, at the Mitchell Center. The Jaguars are part of a four-way tie for first place in the Sun Belt Conference and need a win to secure at least a share of the regular season title for the second consecutive year.
In their most recent game, South Alabama defeated ULM 89-54, maintaining control throughout nearly the entire contest. The team shot 57 percent from the field and held ULM to under 30 percent shooting. Adam Olsen led all scorers with 29 points, making eight three-pointers. Chaze Harris contributed 15 points, five assists, and five rebounds, while Jayden Cooper added 14 points.
Olsen is now three three-pointers away from breaking the school’s single-season record of 99 set by Chris Young during the 2002–03 season. Over the last six games, Olsen, Harris, and Cooper have been key contributors to South Alabama’s strong performance.
The Jaguars have an even all-time record against Southern Miss at 27–27 but have won seven straight games in this series and hold a home advantage at the Mitchell Center. Earlier this season in Hattiesburg, South Alabama defeated Southern Miss with Cooper scoring a career-high 34 points.
Southern Miss enters the matchup with an 8-9 conference record. Tylik Weeks is tied with Harris for leading scorer in the conference at 18.8 points per game. Djahi Binet is also notable for averaging over eleven points and eight rebounds per contest.
According to Synergy Sports data, Chaze Harris leads the nation in total rim points this season—the only guard in Synergy’s database to do so over its fifteen-year history. He accounts for significant portions of South Alabama’s free throw attempts, two-point attempts, and assists.
With one game left before postseason play begins, South Alabama could clinch its thirteenth regular-season championship—and its first back-to-back titles since the 2006–07 season—with a win on Friday night.
