South Alabama will open an eight-game homestand with a matchup against Nicholls State at Stanky Field on April 14. The game is set for Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
The Jaguars, currently holding a record of 21-15 overall and 8-7 in the Sun Belt Conference, are looking to extend their six-game winning streak over the Colonels. South Alabama leads the all-time series with Nicholls State, holding a 38-18 advantage and having won the last two meetings at Stanky Field. This game marks the second and final meeting between the teams this season.
Nicholls State enters the contest with a record of 19-18 overall and an 11-10 mark in Southland Conference play. The Colonels began their season with six straight losses but have since improved, taking series victories over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Houston Christian, and Lamar. Most recently, they secured a series win against Lamar before dropping the finale.
Senior right-hander Tyler Smith is scheduled to make his first start of the season for South Alabama after making three appearances so far this year. Smith started seven games last season for a record of two wins and two losses. Offensively, Rett Johnson had an impressive weekend at Georgia Southern by hitting three home runs and driving in six runs across three games while batting .700 in that series. Duncan Mathews contributed with his second career grand slam during Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern.
Marc Stephens has performed well since moving down in the batting order, hitting .417 over his last six games. Brennon Wright leads South Alabama in hits (49) and batting average (.358), while Blake Guerin hit his conference-leading thirteenth home run of the season during last weekend’s games.
