South Alabama women’s basketball was defeated by Georgia Southern at the Mitchell Center on Saturday, with a final score of 69-46. This loss moves the Jaguars to a 2-7 record in Sun Belt Conference play and 9-10 overall for the season.
The game began with Georgia Southern making a 6-0 run, leading 10-3 within the first six minutes. South Alabama responded by scoring 11 consecutive points and hitting all four of their field goal attempts during that stretch. In the second quarter, South Alabama’s defense held Georgia Southern scoreless for five minutes, but the Eagles managed to recover and led 30-26 at halftime.
Georgia Southern’s Destiny Garrett, who is ranked fourth in scoring in the Sun Belt Conference, contributed significantly in the third quarter by scoring 12 points and making five out of six shots. In the fourth quarter, turnovers became an issue for South Alabama as Georgia Southern forced six turnovers from their backcourt.
Despite the loss, South Alabama limited Georgia Southern below their usual averages in field-goal percentage, three-point shooting, free throws, and blocks per game.
Tamara Ortiz led South Alabama with 19 points—just two short of her career high—and matched her personal best with five assists. This was her fourth straight game setting a new season-high in scoring. Daniela Gonzalez reached a milestone by collecting her 500th career rebound after pulling down six boards against Georgia Southern.
Head coach Yolisha Jackson commented on the team’s challenges: “The quick turnaround hurt us, and it’s just tough. It’s no secret – we don’t handle pressure well. But, we work on it every day, and one day, it’s gonna click.”
Next up for South Alabama is an away game against Appalachian State at Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina. The game is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. EST.
