South Alabama defeated Southeastern Louisiana 10-3 on March 11 at Stanky Field, completing a sweep of the Lions after an earlier win in Hammond, Louisiana. The Jaguars improved their record to 12-5, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to 9-8.
The victory is significant as it marks South Alabama’s continued strong performance early in the season and demonstrates depth throughout the lineup. Eight different players contributed runs batted in during the game.
Both teams scored in the first inning, with South Alabama responding to an early run by putting up five runs, highlighted by Blake Guerin’s two-RBI double and Paxton Bigby’s RBI single. Jaguar starter Hayden O’Dell allowed another run in the third before South Alabama added three more runs in the fifth inning with a triple from Mike Young that drove in two. Additional runs came from a safety squeeze by Duncan Mathews and a pinch-hit double by freshman Charlie Cassingham.
Max Miller earned the win for South Alabama after pitching 2.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run. Zach Stevens, Andrew Floyd, and Brian Garmon each pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The Jaguars finished with ten runs on eight hits and nine RBIs from eight different hitters.
Head coach Mark Calvi said, “We had eight different guys with RBIs after we jumped in the first and again in the fifth with that big three run triple from Mike (Young). Good to see our guys respond with a win. I thought (Max) Miller was the key coming in in the jam in the fourth and facing their strongest guy in the lineup and punched him out. I thought that was the turning point in the game.”
Looking ahead, South Alabama will begin Sun Belt Conference play with a weekend series at Louisiana starting Friday, March 13.
