South Alabama defeated Old Dominion by a score of 10-3 in the opening game of their baseball series on March 27 at Stanky Field.
The Jaguars took an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning and four more in the third. This strong offensive start set the tone for the rest of the game.
Key performances included Brennon Wright, who recorded four hits and five runs batted in, bringing his season total to a Sun Belt-best 41 hits. Stewart Puckett contributed with his second triple of the season, while Duncan Mathews added two hits and two RBI. Paxton Bigby extended his hitting streak to four games with a double and scored twice.
On the mound, Mitchell Heer earned his fourth win of the season after pitching five and two-thirds innings with seven strikeouts. Jaxon Shineflew followed from the bullpen, also striking out seven batters over three and one-third innings. Together, they combined for fourteen strikeouts against Old Dominion hitters.
Head coach Mark Calvi said, “Really good pitching and defense from us tonight. 14 strikeouts, two walks, and no errors. Four different guys with seven combined at the top of the order between Brennon and Duncan.” He continued: “They throw a lot of offspeed. We weren’t going to get caught in between, with them trying to slow you down on those pitches and speeding you up with getting a fastball by. We did a good job staying neutral and reacting to what we saw. The coaches did a great job getting them ready to go and the guys executed a plan.”
The Jaguars improved their record to 7-0 in Friday night contests this season. The series is scheduled to continue Saturday afternoon.
