Sydney Scapin pitched a complete-game shutout on April 11 as South Alabama defeated Georgia State 4-0 at Jaguar Field, evening the Sun Belt Conference softball series.
The result is significant for South Alabama, improving their conference record and showcasing strong performances from both pitching and offense. The win also helps maintain momentum in league play.
Scapin allowed only two hits over seven innings, striking out nine batters and walking one. She faced just four Georgia State hitters who reached base during the game. Presley Lively and Gracie Dees led the Jaguars’ offense with multiple hits each. Kayden Dunn contributed a two-run home run in the first inning to give South Alabama an early lead.
Additional runs came in the fifth inning with a ground out by Oliva Branstetter that scored Lively, followed by Dees hitting a double to bring home pinch runner Gracie McDonald. Georgia State threatened in the sixth but was unable to score as Scapin retired key batters to preserve the shutout.
Lively has now reached base safely in 14 of her last 16 games and extended her single-season and career triples records for South Alabama. The team has hit 29 home runs this spring, with eleven coming during conference play. The Jaguars’ pitching staff recorded its eleventh shutout of the season, while Scapin notched her third complete-game shutout.
South Alabama will conclude its series against Georgia State on Sunday at Jaguar Field.
