South Alabama secured its 20th win of the season with a strong offensive showing, hitting four home runs to defeat Georgia Southern on April 11 at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The game was significant as it allowed South Alabama to even the series against Georgia Southern and demonstrated the team’s power at the plate. The Jaguars’ performance included a grand slam by Duncan Mathews in the second inning and two solo home runs by Rett Johnson, marking his first multi-home run game of his career. Blake Guerin also contributed with his Sun Belt-best 12th home run of the year.
The Jaguars scored five runs in the second inning, setting an early lead that they maintained throughout the game. Marc Stephens added two hits, bringing his total to five in two games during this series. Mike Young collected two hits and scored twice, while Brennon Wright posted two hits and three runs batted in.
On the mound, Ryland Bozenhard earned his first win for South Alabama, pitching five innings with seven hits allowed and four strikeouts. Jake Middleton entered in relief during the sixth inning without allowing a run, while Zach Stevens closed out the final three innings scoreless with four strikeouts.
Head coach Mark Calvi said: “We showed up today offensively for sure. Duncan (Mathews) really got us going with the grand slam after our guys worked hard to get on base to get us off and running. But they’re a very capable and dangerous offense and we knew five runs wasn’t going to be enough at the time. (Ryland) Bozenhard hung in there and pitched with the lead, limiting free passes. Our guys did a really good job on the mound, but we really swung it well today and played really good defense.”
Looking ahead, South Alabama will play Georgia Southern again on Sunday for their series finale.
